Overview of the MSR175 Shock and Temperature Data Logger with Extended Battery

The MSR175 is a small, robust, stand-alone transportation data logger that utilizes high-resolution sensors that accurately and continuously record what happens to your goods during transportation. The recorded data can be used to ascertain possible damage or used to improve transport and shipping packaging. The logger features two internal 3-axis accelerometer sensors that can record +/-15g and +/-200g respectively as well as an internal temperature sensor that has a range of -20°C to 65°C. The logger can measure and record shocks and jolts at a frequency of up to 6,400 measurements per second. The internal non-volatile memory is capable of storing over 2 million measurement values which is enough for up to 1000 shock events. The MSR175 is built with an internal 7700 mAh LiPo-battery which when fully charged can power the logger for a recording period of at least 2 years.

Setting up the logger and viewing the data is done using a powerful package of software which include the easy to use MSR Dashboard, MSR ReportGenerator, and MSR ShockViewer. The MSR Dashboard allows you to easily configure the logger with just a few clicks of your mouse! The ReportGenerator gives you one click access to a compact report while detailed analysis can be done using the ShockViewer software. Convenient export feature allows you to export and view data in Microsoft Excel or as a CSV text file, and to generate a PDF report. You can even merge data from multiple MSR175 loggers for a comprehensive report on how to improve the shipping process.

Mounting Instructions for MSR Shock and Vibration Data Loggers

The data loggers should be force-fitted as close as possible to or on the object to be monitored. Fastening to the packaging or the means of transport will lead to deviating results.

Screw the data loggers to the object at the holes provided. Alternatively, the data loggers can also be fastened with high-strength industrial adhesive tape or cable ties. Magnetic fastening should be avoided. It only acts in the direction of the magnetic field lines - it is not force-locking.

Orientation

Align the Axes of the data Loggers with the main direction of movement. The data loggers can be mounted in any position. Make a note of the position and direction of the axes for later evaluation.

Customer Questions
How is position logged?
The MSR175Pro measures static acceleration in all three axes at configurable intervals (10 or 30 minutes) to log the device's orientation over time. This helps identify tilting events or improper cargo positioning during transport.
What is the humidity sensor accuracy?
The humidity sensor achieves ±2% accuracy in the 10–85% RH range (at 0–40 °C) and ±4% in the 85–95% RH range — suitable for detecting condensation-risk conditions and verifying compliance with storage and transport specifications.
Can the MSR175Pro be used on air freight?
Yes. The MSR175Pro is listed on approved electronic device lists for ANA Cargo and JAL Cargo (Japan) and is approved by Cargolux.
How long does the battery last?
The replaceable Li-SOCl₂ battery provides a minimum of 2 years of operating life. The battery is user-replaceable in the field.
What is the difference between the ring buffer and the auxiliary memory?
The ring buffer continuously records the most recent 1,000 shock events — older events are overwritten as new ones occur. The auxiliary memory records events exceeding a second, higher threshold and cannot be overwritten. This ensures the most critical...
What is the smallest shock threshold the MSR175Pro can detect?
Shock thresholds can be set in increments as small as 0.5 g, giving you precise control over which events are recorded.
Does the MSR175Pro record temperature?
Yes. The standard MSR175Pro includes an internal temperature sensor covering –20 to +65 °C with ±0.5 °C accuracy. If your application also requires humidity, air pressure, and light monitoring, see the MSR175Pro with Climate Sensors.
