Customer Questions
What is the difference between the MX801 and MX802?
The MX801 is fully submersible (IP68, waterproof to 100m with sensor attached) and is deployed directly in the water along with the sensor. The MX802 is designed to remain above the water surface while the sensor is deployed underwater via a cable, allowing...
How is data downloaded from the logger?
Data is downloaded wirelessly via Bluetooth using the HOBOconnect app on a compatible mobile device or Windows computer. For the MX801, the logger must be retrieved from the water to be within Bluetooth range. For the MX802, data can be offloaded without...
How much data can the logger store?
The logger stores up to 730,000 measurements across all active channels (4 MB memory). The number of measurements per channel depends on how many sensors and parameters are being recorded simultaneously.
What logging modes are available?
The logger supports fixed interval logging (normal or statistics), burst logging, and multiple interval logging with up to 8 user-defined logging intervals and durations with pause capability — providing flexibility for a wide range of monitoring applications...
What type of batteries does the logger use and how long do they last?
The logger uses four AA 1.5V lithium batteries, which are user-replaceable in the field. With W-CT or W-CTD sensors at a 1-minute logging interval, battery life is typically 2 years. With the W-DO sensor at a 5-minute logging interval, battery life is...
Are these loggers rated for use in saltwater?
Yes. The logger housing is constructed from PVC with passivated 316 stainless steel hardware, and all wetted materials are rated for use in saltwater environments. The CTD and CT sensors also use passivated 316 stainless steel housings with Viton and...
What is the water depth rating for the MX801?
The MX801 is rated IP68 and waterproof to 100 meters (approximately 328 feet) when a sensor or termination plug is properly attached. The logger is not waterproof if deployed without a sensor attached.
What does the conductivity sensor measure?
The W-CT conductivity sensor directly measures electrical conductivity and temperature. From these measurements, the logger can also calculate specific conductance, salinity, and total dissolved solids (TDS) — providing a comprehensive picture of water...
What is the conductivity measurement range and accuracy?
The 4-electrode conductivity sensor measures from 0 to 100,000 µS/cm with ±2% accuracy across the full range. The centrally located electrodes minimize measurement errors that can occur near stilling wells and protective guards.
Can the conductivity sensor be used in both freshwater and saltwater?
Yes. The wide 0 to 100,000 µS/cm measurement range covers both freshwater (typically 50–500 µS/cm) and saltwater (typically up to ~55,000 µS/cm for seawater) environments.
Which CTD model should I choose for my application?
Choose based on the maximum water depth you need to monitor: the CTD-04 (0–13 ft) is designed for very shallow water such as marshes and tidal flats; the CTD-01 (0–30 ft) suits shallow streams, wetlands, and tidal zones; the CTD-02 (0–100 ft) is ideal...
How does the CTD sensor measure water level?
The CTD sensor uses an absolute pressure sensor located at the tip of the sensor housing to measure the weight of the water column above it, which is then converted to a water level (depth) reading. For compensated water level data that accounts for ...
How accurate is the water level measurement?
Typical water level accuracy varies by sensor model. The CTD-04 (0–13 ft) provides the highest resolution at approximately ±0.3 cm typical error. The CTD-01 (0–30 ft) and CTD-02 (0–100 ft) provide approximately ±0.5 cm and ±1.5 cm typical error respectively...
Do I need to allow time for temperature stabilization after deploying the sensor?
Yes. Allow approximately 20 minutes after deployment for the sensor to fully equilibrate to the water temperature. Rapid temperature changes can introduce up to 0.5% of additional pressure measurement error during the stabilization period.
Do the kit versions require assembly?
Yes. The MX801-DO, MX801-CT, and MX801-CTD kits all require assembly — the sensor must be attached to the logger before deployment. Detailed assembly instructions are included, and the HOBOconnect app guides you through setup and calibration.
